Introducing carrot: From steaming or mashing to pureeing or roasting, there are many ways to offer carrots to your baby. Whether served as a finger food, a dip or from a spoon.
Find ideas for each age group below.
Introducing carrot at 6-9 months
Boiled or steamed, carrots make a bright cheerful puree to start your weaning journey.
Cooked carrots should be soft enough to squish between your finger and thumb.
If offered as a finger food, carrots should be cooked until soft, kept whole and sliced lengthways.
Cooked carrots are brilliant to use as dippers!
Introducing carrot at 9-12 months
Grating raw carrots and lightly steaming them will offer a new texture for your baby to explore.
Mashing cooked carrots with the back of a fork offers a head start on tackling texture.
Offering soft, cooked carrot chopped into pieces the size of your pinky fingernail.
Sprinkling tiny pieces of cooked carrot on the table or highchair tray offers plenty of pincer grip practice.
Introducing carrot at 12-18 months
Mix it up and enhance the taste of carrots…
Simmer carrots in orange juice.
Roast carrots with some sweet cinnamon.
Spiralize some carrots and add a springy element to mealtimes!
Grated raw carrots can be introduced. Offer a drink of water to help wash down any lingering flecks of carrot.
Remember...
Raw carrot is a choking hazard and should be avoided until 12-18months and then it should be grated.
If offering as a finger food it should be sliced into very thin matchsticks.
Never offer chopped raw carrot pieces.
